Join the Growing Number of Families Who Choose Canyons
Education opens doors. In Canyons District, we believe all children deserve access to an education matched to their highest aspirations, interests and needs. School choice means providing parents with options, and the freedom to choose the best option for their child — and a growing number of families are choosing Canyons. More than 23 percent (one in five) of CSD’s 33,000 students are enrolled in the school of their choosing, or a school other than the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries. Under Utah law, students who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school may apply to transfer to another school by submitting a School Choice Open Enrollment request.
Getting Started With the Application Process
School transfers, or Open Enrollment requests, are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis. More information can be found here or by emailing communications@canyonsdistrict.org.

Specialized Programs to Meet Today’s Educational Needs
Canyons strives to be the school district of choice, and there are plenty of reasons to choose to enroll in one of our schools.
- In 2021-2022, Canyons District received a state grant that made it possible to bring all-day kindergarten to eight additional schools. To date, 13 schools offer all-day kindergarten and eight schools offer supplemental, tuition-based kindergarten, providing students with four additional hours of instruction each day.
- Eight CSD schools offer tuition-based preschool programs.
- Roughly 600 students are enrolled in our SALTA magnet program for gifted learners.
- About 3,400 students are learning Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese in dual language immersion programs at 21schools.
- Summer programs, such as workshops in woodworking, dance and computer coding, keep students of all ages busy while school is out of session.
- Canyons Online makes it possible for K-12 students to learn at their own pace and from the comfort of their home. High school students can take online courses in the summer or during the school year to get a jump on learning or free up their regular school schedule for more electives.
- At Alta and Jordan high schools, students can participate in a partnership with the University of Utah called Step2theU. Students begin coursework during the summer of their junior year, and work toward having two complete semesters of college credit by the time they enroll in college.
- Students can sign up for a more rigorous, college-ready curriculum and diploma through the International Baccalaureate Programme at Hillcrest High.
- All of CSD’s high schools provide an array of concurrent enrollment and Advanced Placement courses through which students can early college credit. Brighton High additionally offers the AP Capstone Diploma to students who complete six Advanced Placement courses and earn a score of 3 or higher on the corresponding exams.
- Through the Canyons Technical Education Center (CTEC), CSD’s high school students have access to training in diverse fields ranging from criminal justice to nursing.
- Alta, Brighton, and Hillcrest high schools field marching bands.
- With its tight-knit faculty and staff and small class sizes, CSD’s Diamond Ridge High is the school of choice for students looking for an alternative to the traditional high school experience.
