LearnPlatform

At Canyons, we prioritize both the safety and learning of our students. This is why we carefully assess and approve the technology products employed within our classrooms. The LearnPlatform is a website designed to support educators, families, and other stakeholders in knowing which apps, websites, and extensions have been approved for use in Canyons School District.

If a teacher wants to use an app, website, or extension in their classroom that is not currently listed on the LearnPlatform, they can put in a request. The request is then reviewed by district specialists for safety and learning purposes. Technology tools will be approved in the LearnPlatform if they follow FERPA, CIPA, and COPPA. Although a tool may be approved for use through the LearnPlatform for safety, it does not mean that it follow best practices for teaching and learning for all classrooms, and will have an approval of “not best practice”. Educators can talk to their school’s Instructional Coach, a district curriculum specialist, or their administrator to help decide if a technology tool they’d like to use supports teaching and learning in their classroom.

This video has been adapted from its original purpose to assist families in comprehending FERPA, CIPA, COPPA, and the LearnPlatform.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA safeguards the privacy of students’ educational records and gives parents and eligible students control over access to and disclosure of these records. Visit the U.S. Department of Education website to learn about FERPA.

Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA)

CIPA is about internet safety in schools and libraries, requiring measures to protect children from inappropriate online content. Visit the Federal Communications Commission website to learn more about CIPA.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

COPPA focuses on the online collection of personal information from children under 13 by commercial entities, requiring parental consent and clear privacy policies. Visit the Federal Trade Commission website to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The LearnPlatform provides a list of apps, websites, and extensions that have been vetted and are FERPA, CIPA, and COPPA compliant. The Instructional Materials website will show district-wide, elective, supplemental, and intervention materials that have been selected and approved for use in Canyons School District. When a product is approved for use on the LearnPlatform, it does not mean it is best practice.

Some products that students are using will collect personal information. Products that collect personal information will be tagged with the term “PII Collected”. Filter using this tag to see the products that collect PII.

Products in the LearnPlatform are tagged by Status. If a product can be used by all grade levels, it will show as Approved for Use. Other status options include Approved- Age 13+, Approved K-5, Approved 9-12, etc.

The LearnPlatform will continually be updated based on teacher requests in order to best support our students. In addition, products will be reviewed to ensure that they are still in safety compliance and best practices for teaching and learning.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
