CANYONS AVID!

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary through postsecondary that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System accelerates student learning, uses research-based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

Students in the AVID program are required to take an AVID elective class (each year), as well as Advanced Placement and other rigorous courses.  The AVID curriculum prepares students for college by emphasizing writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, rigor, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities.

Currently, the Canyons AVID program has 390 students throughout the Jordan High Feeder. These students go on field trips to local colleges to experience higher education. When the AVID students are Seniors that have strong academic skills, a high GPA, and a competitive ACT, which helps them qualify for scholarships and receive FREE money to attend colleges. This is seen by the graduating class of 2023:

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer

Answer

Answer

RIGOR without support is a prescription for failure; support without RIGOR is a tragic waste of potential.
- Mary Catherine Swanson-- AVID Founder
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
- Aristotle
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
- Teddy Roosevelt

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
