Getting Involved

Canyons MTSS framework specifies the critical elements of quality instruction, learning environment, and informed decision making, to support schools in the implementation of evidence-based classroom and system-wide practices so that each learner succeeds.

By prioritizing a multitiered approach that provides instructional coherence and support intended to meet the needs and assets of the whole child, this framework serves as the foundation for achieving the important outcomes in the CSD Strategic Plan and realizing the District’s mission for every student to graduate college and career ready.

The resources below are aligned to support our MTSS framework. To explore key features and essential implementation steps for each component, please refer to the Instructional Playbook.

Classroom Practices

Safe & Supportive

Environment

A culture of safety and belonging is reflected by a school climate that is both welcoming and inclusive in which all members of the school community are valued, which provides students with predictability and helps buffer students from stressors.

The Classroom Behavior Essentials represent the PBIS practices needed to create a positive classroom climate, but also improve academic engagement, increase the likelihood of appropriate behavior, decrease the likelihood of behavioral errors, and enhance social skills.

High Quality

Teaching & Learning

Effective instructional design begins with understanding the lived experiences, culture, and background knowledge of your students. Students are more motivated to learn when they understand why they are learning something, can personally connect to the content, and feel supported through productive struggle.

Teachers utilize high leverage strategies intentionally to maximize student learning. These high leverage strategies have high effect sizes and are easy to implement.

Data-Based

Decision Making

A comprehensive assessment system promotes the careful selection of the right assessment at the right time to provide the right information for actionable next steps.

A tiered teaming structure, clear teaming practices, systematic data review, and decision making protocols enable collaborative teams to engage in effective problem solving.

Tiered System of Supports & Educator Growth

Tiered systems of support are designed to ensure that ALL students are provided with the access and educational strategies they need to maximize their success in a systematized way.

Providing opportunities for educators to grow professionally and continuously improve their skills leads to more effective teaching strategies and better student outcomes.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
