School Choice Applications Open Nov. 15 for Top-Ranked Canyons School District

Hundreds of families are expected to compete for available spots in Canyons District schools when the School Choice application window opens Sunday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m.

In Utah, parents can apply to have their students attend a school outside their neighborhood boundaries by submitting a School Choice/Open Enrollment request — and a growing number are choosing Canyons.

The number of families coming to Canyons from outside the school district has climbed 23.5 percent since the 2023–2024 school year, reaching 1,656 this year. With applications reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, families hoping to attend their preferred Canyons school are encouraged to apply early. The application window for the 2027-2028 school year closes at midnight on Friday, Feb. 5, 2027.

Canyons continues to be the school district of choice for students from both within and outside our boundaries with schools earning top honors in national rankings and students leading Salt Lake County in college entrance exam performance:

  • CSD was ranked Salt Lake County’s No. 1 school district by Niche.com.
  • Thirty-three schools in CSD earned “Best in State” status from U.S. News and World Report.
  • Thirty students this year were named semi-finalists for National Merit Scholarships.
  • Newly released results for the Class of 2026 show Canyons continuing to lead Salt Lake County’s five school districts in ACT performance, with 71.7 percent of students earning a composite score of 18 or higher. Canyons also outperformed local charter school systems: American Preparatory Academy where 56.5 percent of students scored 18 or higher across English, reading, and math; and Summit Academy, where 55.5 percent reached that benchmark.

“Families have more choices than ever when it comes to their children’s education, and we believe our schools give them every reason to choose Canyons,” said CSD Superintendent Dr. McKay Robinson. “We’re proud of our results, but what matters most is that every student who walks through our doors feels welcomed, valued, and encouraged to achieve great things.”

As always, families may submit more than one application. Parents will rank their preferred schools, and CSD’s enrollment team will work to place students wherever space and eligibility allow.

Per District policy, transportation services are only provided for students who live within a school’s official boundary. Also, permits do not follow students to middle school and high school. If a student lives outside the boundaries for their preferred secondary schools, they will need to apply for permits to attend those schools.

Applying is easy and can be done online through CSD’s Admissions Office. Questions? Please contact Canyons District’s Admissions Office, 801-826-5181.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
