Becoming Highly Qualified

Paraprofessionals play important roles in our schools.  Those paraprofessionals assigned to providing instructional assistance in a Canyons School District Title I school are required to have a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND one of the following:

 

  • An Associate Degree
  • 48 semester hours or 60 quarter hours of college credit
  • Passing score (460) on the Praxis ParaPro Exam

Praxis ParaPro Assessment

What is It?

The ParaPro Assessment consists of 90 multiple-choice questions that measure skills & knowledge in reading, writing and math and the ability to apply those skills & knowledge when assisting in classroom instruction.  The test is completed online by appointment only through the CSD Department of Federal & State Programs (see below).

Is the test timed?

Yes, test takers have two and a half hours to complete the test.

What if I do not pass?

A passing score for Utah is a 460.  If you score below that, you must wait 28 days before taking the test again.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
