Policy 600.18 – Middle School Education Requirements



Board Policy

  1. The Board of Education believes in setting high expectations for middle school students that will enable them to increase their capacities and further prepare them for high school, college and career. The Board of Education acknowledges and accepts its duty to implement core standards for instruction and graduation requirements as outlined in Utah state law (See, U.C.A. §53G-4-402).  Specifically, the Board of Education claims and exercises its statutory authority to firmly establish high expectations for Canyons students in the form of course-taking patterns, and programs of study to encourage excellence and academic achievement.  
  2. The Board of Education exercises its statutory authority to determine courses and programs of study for progress towards high school.
  3. To assist CSD Middle schools in meeting these objectives, the Board directs the District Administration to develop course description and materials for use by school administrators, counselors, and other guidance personnel to supervise course selection.
  4. The Board of Education authorizes the District Administration to develop Administrative Regulations consistent with this policy, subject to review and approval by the Board of Education.



Middle School Education Requirements - 600.18-1

  1. A student in grades 6-8 is required to complete the core standards and general core requirements for a middle school student (See, R277-700-5 (3)).  
  2. In addition to the state core requirements, the District may offer additional elective courses. For a list of courses, please refer to Canyons School District’s 2018-2019 Secondary Course Catalog.  
  3. The District will use evidence-based practices, technology, and other instructional media in middle school curricula to increase the relevance and quality of instruction.
  4. The District shall use State Board-approved summative adoptive assessments to assess student achievement.



Request for a Course Substitution; Course Determination; Appeal - 600.18-2

  1. Request for a Course Substitution: A parent or student, with parental consent, may request to substitute a course requirement with a course, extracurricular activity, or experience that is:
    1. Similar to the course requirement; or
    2. Consistent with the student’s plan for college and career readiness.
  2. Course Substitute Determination: A course substitute determination is a decision for the local school based on an analysis including, but not limited to the following factors:
    1. A student’s preparation for high school core (math, language arts, science, social studies) content and skill requirements;
    2. A review of the substitute course standards;
    3. Elective course availability at the school; and
    4. Enrollment in a district magnet program.
  3. Appeal: A course determination appeal may be submitted to a three-person Course Determination Appeal Panel appointed by the Superintendent or superintendent’s designee.
  4. Appeal to the Board of Education: The decision of the Course Determination Appeal Panel may be appealed in writing to the Board of Education only for procedural error or to submit any new evidence.
    1. The written appeal must be submitted within ten (10) business days of receiving the decision of the District’s appeal panel.
    2. The Board of Education shall review written appeals submitted at the next available Board meeting.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
