Policy 300.16 – Cybersecurity

Board Policy

  1. The Board of Education recognizes the need to safeguard the District’s information technology (IT) resources (i.e., systems, networks, and programs) from digital attacks, and is committed to compliance with federal law and state law regarding ongoing efforts to strengthen the Canyons School District’s Cybersecurity.
  2. The Board of Education stands ready to cooperate with statewide cybersecurity assessments and information-sharing initiatives coordinated by the Utah Cyber Center and the Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN).
  3. The Board further recognizes the importance of providing workforce training components for students, staff, contractors, and third-party vendors.
  4. The Board authorizes the Superintendent and Administration to establish administrative regulations consistent with the policy.

Governance and Oversight - 300.16-1

To assist with governance and oversight for Cybersecurity Issues, the District will do the following.  

  1. Designate a Primary Cybersecurity Contact: A dedicated individual (CISO or IT Director) to oversee the District’s cyber defense plan and interface with the Utah Cyber Center.  The District’s Cybersecurity Contact is the District IT Director.  
  2. Incident Reporting: Voluntarily report any data breach or significant cybersecurity incident to the Utah Cyber Center to receive state-level technical assistance and coordination.
  3. State Coordination: Participate in cybersecurity assessments facilitated by UETN to identify vulnerabilities in the K-12 network infrastructure.

Workforce Training; Enforcement and Review - 300.16-2

Workforce Training

The District will provide mandatory Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training for all staff, including:

1. Phishing Defense: Identifying and reporting sophisticated social engineering attempts

2. Data Handling: Secure storage and transmission of PII.

Enforcement and Review

This policy will be reviewed annually by the District Board to ensure alignment with the statewide efforts in Cybersecurity.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
