East Sandy Teacher to Bring Students’ Input to New City Council Seat

Alison Stroud has taken the idea of teaching civics to a new level. It started last year, when the East Sandy Elementary teacher decided to throw her hat in the ring for a seat on Sandy’s City Council. As she campaigned, unknowingly knocking on doors where her students lived and passing out flyers to parents […]

CSD’s Ofelia Wade Recognized by Spanish Government

The week before Thanksgiving, Ofelia Wade received with characteristic humility a special token of gratitude and appreciation from the Spanish government that was 10 years in the making. Wade, who serves as the Dual Language Immersion Spanish Coordinator for Canyons and the state of Utah, was invited by Spanish Ambassador Santiago Cabanas to attend a […]

Alta High’s Rique Ochoa Crowned Utah History Teacher of the Year

Rique Ochoa’s approach to teaching is simple: stick with what you love. As an Alta High history teacher, Ochoa loves to tell stories. He loves to make history relatable to his students, and he loves to expose them to the experts in his field. That’s what has motivated him to teach for nearly 40 years, […]

Beloved Altara Elementary Teacher Honored with Huntsman Award

Joani Richardson is the kind of teacher who can breathe new life into words, pull magic from a page, and spark wonder in the eyes of eager-to-learn children. “I love to teach children to love to read,” says Richardson. “I have failed if I have not taught a child to love to read.” For her […]

Brighton High Civics Teacher Wins Coveted Huntsman Award

Students in Aaron Hadfield’s “American problems” class don’t just learn about the country’s governing bodies, politics and history. They experience it firsthand in simulations that challenge them to apply their knowledge of such concepts as freedom, democracy and justice. And in the process – whether they’ve spent two weeks under totalitarian rule or jockeying for […]

CCHS Premieres New Music by a Seattle Composer

It’s rehearsal and the first time that Seattle composer Giselle Wyers has heard her musical piece “Surge Illuminare” performed. “It’s beautiful!” she tells visibly relieved members of Corner Canyon High School’s choir. “I really like what you’ve brought to it.” The choir has been working for months to interpret and perfect this song in anticipation […]

Lone Peak Volunteer Honored With Huntsman Award

It’s evident that Debbie Beninati’s passion lies in introducing children to the world of music. By her own admission, she’s a music education “junkie,” and delights in taking a group of beginners and turning them into a fine-tuned orchestra in less than a year. But Beninati isn’t paid for her work at Lone Peak Elementary, […]

Brighton Teacher Wins Huntsman Award

Brighton High’s Jim Hodges is one of the recipients of a 2011 Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education. Jon M. Huntsman Sr. and his family created the annual awards program to recognize and reward Utah teachers, administrators, and volunteers for “continually seeking ways to improve the quality of education in our public education system.”  The […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
