Neither will their brand-new basketball and soccer coaches – each one has summer plans for their respective teams. Coach Garrett Wilson became Brighton’s new head boys’ basketball coach this spring after leading high school teams for […]

2 CSD Students Receive First-Ever Kirby Memorial Scholarships

“On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence have devolved on us the task of a double living, that we have henceforth to fulfill the promise of our friend’s life also, in our own, to the world.” – Henry David Thoreau Two Canyons District students have been awarded the […]

Pomp and Circumstance: CSD Lauds Class of 2016

Alta High Alta High’s class of 2016 may be the smallest the school has ever seen, but they are a force to be reckoned with. In the 2015-2016 school year, the graduates fundraised $175,000, earned $4 million in scholarship awards and received 728 concurrent and AP credits, saving some $655,000 in college tuition. “We have […]

CSD Students Prepare to Graduate, Start New Journeys

Emma Critchlow is proof that it’s never too late to start again. Once she put her mind to it, nothing could stop this Brighton High senior from crossing the commencement stage with her peers – not homelessness, financial constraints, nor even the daunting task of making up a year’s worth of school credits lost due […]

Brighton High Civics Teacher Wins Coveted Huntsman Award

Students in Aaron Hadfield’s “American problems” class don’t just learn about the country’s governing bodies, politics and history. They experience it firsthand in simulations that challenge them to apply their knowledge of such concepts as freedom, democracy and justice. And in the process – whether they’ve spent two weeks under totalitarian rule or jockeying for […]

CSD Teachers, Principals Find Ways to Address ‘Senioritis’

With Canyons District high school commencements on the not-so-distant horizon, many soon-to-be-graduates are suffering from a condition called “senioritis.” If you have a teenage student who is just weeks away from wrapping up his or her final year in high school, you know what we’re talking about: It can be a monumental task to get […]

Bengals Swim with the Sharks and Surface with Marketable Ideas

It was a feeding frenzy at Brighton High School Wednesday as students delivered their best elevator pitches to a panel of venture capitalists at a mock “Shark Tank” competition. The contest was modeled after a popular TV show where entrepreneurs compete to convince potential investors to invest in their start-ups. It was sponsored by the […]

Bubbles: Built for Combat, Bringing Laughter

The name “Bubbles” may seem out of character for a robot programmed to lay siege on a medieval fortress. But it’s sure to give spectators a giggle – and possibly put Alta High’s opponents off guard at the 2016 Utah Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. “That’s why my students like it. You can’t say the name […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
