CSD Student-Artists Race the Clock at ArtStock

It’s been said that people are least creative when racing the clock. Don’t tell that to the aspiring Monets and Michelangelos from Alta, Jordan, Corner Canyon, and Hillcrest high schools who recently completed in ArtStock, a timed art-creation contest held annually at Jordan High. The event, which requires students to create an original piece of 2-D […]

Midvalley’s ‘Arts-Kids’ Inspired By Songs, Dances, Activities

Every Tuesday after school a group of about 20 students at Midvalley Elementary gather in a room and decompress their day. They chat, color and eat snacks for a bit – and then it’s down to business. Circle time. As the kids make their way to the floor, assembling themselves in an oblong circle the size […]

American Indian Story-teller Inspires Hillcrest Students

School assemblies can sometimes get a little noisy, but when Dovie Thomason, a Kiowa-Apache storyteller, started talking to the students in Hillcrest’s auditorium on a recent Wednesday, you could have heard a pin drop. The students were mesmerized by Thomason’s performance, which took place as part of the Center for Documentary Expression and Art’s month-long […]

Hillcrest High’s auditorium has been reinvented as skate park for the flashy arrival of “Starlight Express,” the rock musical by Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Webber.  Hillcrest is the first high school in Utah to stage the ambitious show, which is about toy trains that spring to life through a child’s imagination. Throughout the production, which features elaborate […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
