Policy 700.03 Exhibit 3 – Indian, Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Education (Title VI)

Canyons School District is committed to work with parents, family, and community in Title VI programs to assist Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaskan Native students can meet the unique cultural, language, and educational needs of these students, and ensure all students can meet the same challenging State academic standards that all children are expected to meet.

  1. In meeting these objectives, the District will promote participation in culturally responsive programs for students, parents, and community of Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaskan Natives. 
  2. The District will promote programs to assist Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaskan Natives to gain knowledge and understand Native communities, languages, tribal histories, traditions, and cultures; and to ensure the teachers, principals, and other leaders, and other staff who serve students to have the ability to provide culturally appropriate and effective instruction and supports to students.      
  3. The District will work with students, parents, and community members to establish the Parent Committee, and meet federal requirements for public hearings, plans, and evaluation of programs to support Indian education in accordance with Title VI.
  4. The District will comply with enrollment rules and procedures for identification of student in accordance Title VI with Form 506.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
