CSD Honors Nine Outstanding Educators

Paraeducators provide behavioral supports, one-on-one tutoring, and the extra instructional time and attention that some students need to thrive. These champions of children support teachers and form a vital communication-link to parents. Schools simply can’t operate effectively without them, and to show our appreciation, Canyons District’s Department of Special Education each year honors thebest in the business. […]

Teachers Get First Peek At the New Midvale Middle

When architects of the new Midvale Middle suggested cloistering the library in a quiet corner of the building, the school’s Media Specialist said, “Sorry, but that just won’t do.” The library, she explained, should be at the center of the school. It should be an open, inviting space for students to hang out with friends, […]

Open Houses: Applauding the Contributions of CSD Retirees

Honoring a proud tradition, Canyons District is bidding a fond farewell to retiring colleagues. Sixty-two employees are departing Canyons this year for their happily ever after. Some have devoted 40 years or more to Utah’s public school system, and many have worked for Canyons since the district’s inception in 2009. All of them have contributed […]

Ridgecrest Elementary Choir Composes, Performs an Opera

What if the Three Little Pigs were really the bad guys? What if the Fairy Godmother never showed up? Who would win in a dance battle, Cinderella or Snow White? There’s nothing quite like a fairytale to capture the imagination of a child. So, an invitation to re-write one seemed the most natural place for […]

Beloved Altara Elementary Teacher Honored with Huntsman Award

Joani Richardson is the kind of teacher who can breathe new life into words, pull magic from a page, and spark wonder in the eyes of eager-to-learn children. “I love to teach children to love to read,” says Richardson. “I have failed if I have not taught a child to love to read.” For her […]

Canyons Education Foundation Awards Scholarship to Six Deserving Students

Family is important to Vinnie Vala’au, though for most of his youth, the stable home life he yearned for, and wanted to provide his two younger siblings, remained just out of reach. “Growing up, I faced a lot of trials,” says the Alta High senior. But sometimes home is where you find it, and Vinnie […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
