Work Of School Psychologists Noted During Awareness Week

Rory Matson spends his days “juggling, like, seven different balls.” As the school psychologist at Midvale Elementary, he dedicates his hours to counseling students, handling unexpected student-behavior crises, communicating with families, and completing the reams of required paperwork. While he may start his day with a plan, he’s rarely able to stick to it. “There’s […]

The renderings were created by MHTN Architects, the architectural firm selected by the Board of Education to design the school following a competitive bid process. What do you do when a third of your student body is taking the ACT EXPLORE test? Issue the ultimate academic challenge. Albion Middle School this year started a new initiative, which the administration says is likely to become tradition. While the eighth-grade students participated in the fall EXPLORE test, the sixth- and seventh-grade students […]

Eastmont Recycles Ton of Paper; ‘America Recycles Day’ Friday

Eastmont Middle School is akin to Canyons School District’s poster child for Utah’s premiere “America Recycles Day” event. Eastmont’s faculty and staff last week received a free dinner, as well as reusable water bottles, for recycling more than 1 ton of paper products in 14 days of Canyons School District’s “Reduce Your Waste” contest. In spring […]

Alta High Celebrates Contributions Of Country’s Veterans

Alta High students donned their best dresses, skirts, pants and ties on Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 – but they weren’t going to Homecoming or getting gussied up for a dance. Instead, students chose to dress up for a special Veterans Day assembly during which they honored members of the U.S. Armed Forces. About 30 veterans – many […]

Jordan High Teacher Named Utah FCS Teacher of the Year

Natalie Hancock’s class isn’t your mama’s Family and Consumer Sciences class. The Jordan High teacher infuses her curriculum with education technology, math and science – even social media platforms – to help kids make connections between her classes and the real world. For her “flipped classroom” efforts, Hancock was named the Teacher of the Year […]

Canyons Salutes Veterans In The Schools, Community

Allan Setterberg is a proud veteran who knows firsthand that freedom is not free. Setterberg, who has worked as a custodian in Jordan and Canyons districts for 23 years, recalls his tour of duty in the Vietnam War with equal doses of pride and patriotism, somberness and sincerity, reflection and resilience.  “If anyone ever tells you they weren’t […]

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
