Is Your Kindergartner Ready for Takeoff? Apply for Supplemental Kindergarten

The countdown to kindergarten has begun. All systems are “go,” and we are ready for takeoff.

Canyons District’s Supplemental Hours of Kindergarten Instruction program sets up students for a successful school launch — and our school is pleased to be offering the popular, tuition based program. Those interested in enrolling for the 2023-2024 school year can apply online starting Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.

Students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2023 to participate. Space is limited and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Computers are available at our school for families who do not have Internet connectivity at home.

Supplemental Kindergarten is for families looking for the full kindergarten experience. Students who are accepted into the program will receive nearly four more hours of daily instruction than those enrolled in traditional half-day kindergarten. This means they’ll begin and end school the same time as their first- through fifth-grade peers.

“This first year of learning is so important for students. It sets the foundation for all future learning at a time when children’s brains are on fire developmentally,” says Canyons teacher specialist Leigh Ann Fisher. “Supplemental Kindergarten provides more time for learning as well as for hands-on activities and socializing with peers.”

The cost for the program is $2,950 a year, and can be paid in monthly installments. A 10 percent discount is available for parents and guardians who pay the yearly tuition in full at one time. There also is a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $100. Financial-need scholarships also are available for qualifying students.

Phase one of the application process will end on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 11:59 p.m. By Feb. 15, families will be notified of whether their students have been admitted to a school of their choosing or placed on a waiting list with the option of enrolling in a school with openings.

More information, including answers to common questions and a link to the application, can be found on this informational webpage.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
