SALTA Gifted and Talented Program

Welcome to Canyons School District’s gifted program, SALTA – Supporting Advanced Learners Toward Achievement. We believe in unleashing the potential of advanced learners by providing a personalized learning experience that matches their unique characteristics.

In SALTA, we embrace the Latin meaning of our name, “leap,” as we encourage our students to take bold steps in their educational journey by exploring subjects in-depth, asking complex questions, and applying their unique skills and talents to the real-world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Identifying giftedness in children can be complex, as it encompasses a wide range of abilities, behaviors, and characteristics. Here are some common signs that might indicate your child is gifted and talented:

  1. Early achievement in specific areas, such as reading, mathematics, or creative pursuits.
  2. Curiosity and advanced questioning.
  3. Rapid learning and skill mastery.
  4. Rich and extensive vocabulary.
  5. Strong problem-solving abilities.
  6. Intense focus on interests.
  7. Creative and imaginative thinking.
  8. Heightened sensitivity to emotions.
  9. Independent pursuit of learning.
  10. Complex and abstract thinking.
  11. Exploring “what if” scenarios.
  12. Passion for learning across subjects.
  13. Interest in advanced topics.
  14. Exceptional memory.
  15. Quick understanding of complex concepts.
It is important to remember that while these characteristics can provide insight, giftedness is multifaceted and might manifest differently in each child.

Testing is offered at every CSD school during the regular school day. Students testing from October 23-November 172023, who meet our qualification criteria, will be offered placement for the 2024-2025 school year.

It’s wonderful that you’re invested in your child’s education and success. While it’s natural to want to support them in every way possible, it’s important to note that test preparation isn’t always the most effective approach for gifted and talented testing. Gifted testing is designed to assess a child’s innate abilities and potential, rather than their ability to prepare for a specific test.

Instead of focusing solely on test preparation, nurture a love for learning, exploration, and critical thinking in your child. Encouraging your child to engage in various activities, pursue their interests, read widely, and engage in conversations that stimulate their curiosity can be more beneficial. This holistic approach helps develop the skills that gifted and talented programs often seek, such as creativity, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of concepts.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
