Ribbon Cutting: Come See the New Union Middle School

Great care and attention has gone into building the new home for the Bobcats.

Built to modern seismic standards, the new school building is considerably more energy efficient than its 55-year-old predecessor. Conservation-minded students will appreciate the waterwise landscaping. The concrete and steel construction is low-maintenance and durable.

“The new Union Middle is built to last. It will not only be safer and more comfortable and cost-efficient — it’s also a more functional learning environment for our teachers and students,” said Principal Brenda McCann. “We’re so excited to be filling this building with the sounds of learning.”

The campus is nearing completion, and to celebrate we’re hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house tour of the campus on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Students, parents, teachers, alumni, and community members are invited to attend the event, which kicks off at 6 p.m.

“The evening will double as our back-to-school night, which is a great opportunity for parents to meet teachers and a get a feel for the new building,” McCann said. “We’ll be barbecuing and serving hot dogs. It will be a grand celebration of the much-awaited completion of our new school.”

For those who can’t make it in person, the event will also be broadcast live on CSDTV for the entire community to enjoy.

The path to the completion of Union Middle was paved by voter-approval of a school safety bond in 2017.  Due to its age, and need for seismic improvements, a facilities review determined it would more cost-effective to rebuild the school than renovate it.

“Seeing this campus rise anew warms my heart,” said Canyons Board of Education Vice President Mont Millerberg. “This is a momentous occasion for the District and community, which has entrusted us to build and maintain safe, high-quality learning environments that inspire students to achieve. This new school will benefit the students of today and generations to come.”

The school is wired for today’s teaching technologies and has more than a few wow factors, including, a Ninja-style obstacle course and climbing wall. Here are a few additional highlights:

  • Collaboration areas
  • A modern auditorium for the school’s renowned stage performances.
  • A high-tech Media Center
  • A Bobcat Den with special lighting and acoustics for events and presentations.
  • Plentiful windows, skylights and reflective surfaces to maximize natural light.
  • Themed wings for each grade level
  • A wellness room and gymnasium with adaptive equipment

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
