Curtain Call: CSD High Schools Announce Fall Musical Times, Dates

What do you get when you combine an optimistic and chipper sponge with an odd, wealthy and ghoulish family, an orphan in Victorian England who’s hungry for love and anything but gruel, an unrefined princess from a swamp, and a spunky woman from a gold mining town who’s in love with two men who happen to be the same man?

If you guessed the lineup of fall musicals at Canyons District’s talented high school theater departments — “SpongeBob the Musical,” “The Addams Family,” “Oliver!,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” and “Crazy for You” — go ahead and treat yourself to a Krabby Patty or any other type of food, glorious food you’d like.

Jordan High theater-arts students will kick off the District’s musical season — definitely one of our favorite seasons — by putting on their rendition of “Once Upon a Mattress.” The old classic is a humorous spin on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” The Beetdiggers’ production runs from Nov. 3-7.

Corner Canyon High will delight audiences by performing “Crazy for You,” a romantic comedy musical that features catchy tunes from Ira and George Gershwin. And, really, who could ask for anything more? The Chargers’ musical run goes from Nov. 10-14.

Alta High and Hillcrest High will put on shows in their wonderful new auditoriums from Nov. 16-21. The Hawks’ musical, “The Addams Family,” is sure to be a hit for fans of bizarre people who are creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and all together ooky.

Hillcrest’s theater department is bound to captivate crowds with the twist it puts on “Oliver!” Some audience members might even ask for an extra serving.

Brighton High will round up the Canyons District fall musical season by recreating a harrowing and heartwarming adventure in Bikini Bottom. The Bengals will perform “SpongeBob the Musical” four times between Dec. 1-3.

Casts and crews at all five schools are already rehearsing, crafting sets and costumes, and working hard to put on entertaining shows. All the shows will be staged in the auditoriums of the respective schools.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
