Getting Involved

Oh the places CSD’s retirees will go, the things they will see!

Oh the things we’ll do, the places we’ll go, and the people we’ll see when the pandemic is safely behind us.

After a year of Netflix binging and home improvements, we’ve just about exhausted our pandemic to-do lists. Who can blame us for looking ahead and pondering which of our forgotten pastimes and unrealized adventures we want to carry on with first — and who better to seize the moment than Canyons District’s retirees?

More than 80 CSD employees have signaled their intention to make this year of teaching, counseling, bus driving, or custodial and administrative work their last. No one could have imagined distance learning, face masks, and hand-sanitizer as the scenario for the conclusion of their careers. Yet, they’ve rolled up their sleeves, guided by passion and kindness to give their all to students in a year when students needed it most.

Now, it’s time to celebrate. As the great Theodor Seuss Geisel says: “Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” The future holds many unknowns and “streets that are unmarked.” But, “it’s opener, out there, in the wide, open air,” and for people as “brainy and footsy” as you, there is oh so much fun to have, so much to do.

Whether their post-pandemic plans are to scuba dive and skydive, or they look forward to hugging their grandchildren and catching a movie with friends, CSD’s retirees are bound for great destinations, and deserve a proper send-off. Health guidelines bar us from hosting our traditional by-invitation-only Retirees Banquet. But each will receive a gift basket full of goodies and mementos courtesy of the Canyons Board of Education and administration, and schools and departments are saluting their retirees at Open House events held in line with physical distancing requirements.

Below is a list of those events. To be added to the list below, email the name of the retiree and the date, time and place of the Open House to communications@canyonsdistrict.org

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
