Apply Now: Canyons Expands On-Site Childcare for Employees

Here’s yet another reason to work for Canyons School District: easy access to affordable childcare.

Canyons is expanding its District-sponsored, school-based day care for employees. Now through midnight on Friday, April 15, Canyons employees can apply online to enroll their children at one of the following locations for the 2024-2025 school year:

  • Jordan High: six weeks to five years of age
  • Corner Canyon High: six weeks to five years of age

After April 15, applicants will be added to a waitlist.

“We urge interested employees to apply soon, because we anticipate demand will be high,” said Canyons Human Services Director Steve Dimond, who has worked to expand childcare benefits with the District’s Career and Technical Education Department, which sponsors an Early Childcare Training Center (ECTC) at Jordan High.

“With child care centers closing and costs soaring, we know our employees are struggling more than ever before to secure high-quality and affordable care for their children during the day so they can work. It just made sense for us to grow our ECTCs and offer this perk to more of our employees,” Dimond said.

Enrollment will be based upon the Canyons Board of Education-approved priorities described in this Parent/Guardian Handbook and a first-come, first-served basis.

ECTC’s are part of the District’s Family and Consumer Science program. In addition to providing high-quality affordable child care for the children and grandchildren of Canyons’ employees, these centers are a laboratory for high school students to gain experience in early childhood education.

Both the Jordan and Corner Canyon locations are open during the school year from 6:50 a.m. to 4:10 p.m.

Employees can choose to enroll their children for five days, three days, or every other day (A or B days).

Tuition for the program ranges from $365 to $850 per month, depending on the schedule the family chooses and whether the child is diapered or non-diapered. The tuition is deducted directly through CSD’s payroll.

“We look forward to providing this benefit for our employees and possibly adding more ECTC’s in the coming years,” Dimond said.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
