Mill Hollow Summer Camp Discussion

The Board of Education heard a report on Mill Hollow, an environmental learning center owned by the U.S. Forest Service.  The camp, located about 77 miles from the Canyons Administration Building-East, was previously operated by Granite District. Granite stopped running trips to the camp because of budget constraints. Figures provided by Granite showed that GSD paid $320,282 and $260,171 to fund the camp in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 – the last two years GSD operated Mill Hollow. Superintendent Briscoe said that Canyons would need to examine student-supervision, personnel and transportation issues if CSD decided to pursue a Mill Hollow partnership. Board of Education 2^nd Vice President Nancy Tingey asked the administration to provide additional information on the group that is currently operating the camp. Board President Sherrill Taylor said the Board has the obligation to look into the camp as an option for the CSD community. The Board requested more information to be discussed at a future Board meeting. 

Canyons’ USBA Representation

Board member Amber Shill will serve as Canyons District’s representative for the Utah School Board Association. The CSD seat, held for the past three years by Tingey, is vacant now that Tingey has been appointed USBA president-elect pro-tem until January. In addition, CSD Business Administrator Leon Wilcox has been appointed to a two-year position as the school-district business administrator on the USBA’s Joint Legislative Committee. President Taylor asked Tingey and Wilcox to discuss how they would proceed if USBA wanted to take a stance on legislation that ran counter to the positions of the Canyons Board of Education and CSD legislative-affairs representatives. Tingey said the posts allow the District to have a seat at the table and guide discussion about how legislative proposals would impact public education as a whole and CSD as a Local Education Agency. Wilcox said his first priority is Canyons District. 

Consent Agenda

The Board approved the Consent Agenda, which included the approval of March hires and terminations; LAND Trust amendments; and the hiring of Denise Haycock, currently the administrative assistant in the Special Education Department, as the Board secretary and administrative assistant to Superintendent Briscoe and Business Administrator Leon Wilcox.
