As part of the back-to-school preparations, parents of Canyons District students are encouraged to spend some time checking their family’s school-bus transportation eligibility and becoming familiar with any changes to the bus routes for the upcoming school year.

According to Utah law, Canyons District receives funding for busing provided to general-education students in kindergarten through fifth grade who live at least 1 ½ miles from school and students in grades six through 12 who live at least 2 miles from school.
Before a 2025 change in the statute, sixth-grade students qualified for busing if they lived more than 1 ½ miles from their boundary school. The law changed last year, however, and that impacted the bus-route planning.
As a result, many of the bus stops and pick-up and drop-off times were changed last year.
The majority of those changes remain in place—but CSD doesn’t want any family to be surprised when school starts on Monday, Aug. 17, CSD’s first day of school for first- through 12th-grade students. Kindergarten starts Wednesday, Aug. 19. Preschool classes start Monday, Aug. 24.
To support families with students who don’t qualify for transportation, Canyons School District will continue offering its popular space-available bus permit program, which allows non-qualifying students to request a seat on a bus.
The space-available bus permits are granted only is space is available and are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications for space-available permits will open at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, coinciding with the start of Back-to-School Online Registration. Applications must be submitted online through the CSD website.
Families without access to a computer or internet service may use computers available in school lobbies to complete the Back-to-School Online Registration process.
Students who already qualify for transportation services do not need to apply for a permit. In addition, students attending schools outside their designated geographic boundaries are not eligible for the permit program, with the exception of students riding SALTA routes.
Transportation services for non-qualifying students will not be available during the first few weeks of school while the district verifies the number of students guaranteed transportation under state law. By Sept. 11, the Transportation Department will provide schools with a list of students approved for space-available permits. Available seats will be assigned according to the timestamp on submitted applications, with the earliest applicants receiving priority.
Families whose permit requests are approved will be notified automatically through the online application system.
