Summer Eats: Here’s Where Kids and Teens Can Find Free Summer Meals

When school is out for the summer, the stovetops will still be sizzling in Canyons District cafeterias.

Four Canyons schools will be serving free breakfast and lunch from June 5 to July 28 as part of the federally-approved Summer Food Service Program. All children 18 years and younger are eligible to receive the nutritional meals free of charge.

“This is a program for all children. You don’t need to be enrolled in Canyons District, or even live within our boundaries, to take advantage of these summer meals,” said CSD’s Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas.

The meals will be served at the following sites, Monday through Friday. Breakfast will run from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • East Midvale Elementary, 6990 S. 300 East, Midvale
  • Midvale Elementary, 7830 South Chapel Street, Midvale
  • Sandy Elementary, 8725 S. 280 East, Sandy
  • Copperview Elementary,  8449 Monroe St., Midvale

There will be no meal service on June 19, and July 4 and 25 when Canyons schools close in observance of national and state holidays.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
