Thirty Stellar CSD Students Shine as National Merit Scholar Semifinalists

Thirty Canyons District seniors have earned prestigious semifinalist honors in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the nation’s highest-achieving high school students.

They are now part of an elite group of high school students being considered for $24 million in scholarships to be awarded in the spring.

CSD counts semifinalists from Alta, Brighton, Corner Canyon and Hillcrest high schools.

“Having 30 high school seniors named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists is a testament to the excellence of Canyons schools and our students’ dedication to learning and service,” said Superintendent Dr. McKay Robinson. “The accomplishments of these stellar students reflects the amazing support of their parents and families, as well as all their teachers throughout their years in school.”

Canyons’ semifinalists entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking a Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. The number of semifinalists in a particular state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

For the next step, semifinalists and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

The National Merit Scholarship semifinalists from Canyons District are:

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
