Open to All CSD High School Students: Naval Cadet Corps Program

Canyons School District students looking for a challenge — and a chance to lead — are invited to enroll in Jordan High School’s National Naval Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) program.

Open to students in grades 9–12 from across the District, the Naval Cadet Corps combines academic rigor with hands-on learning, leadership development, and competitive team opportunities. Students can remain enrolled at their home high schools while participating in the program.

Jordan High’s program — the only one of its kind at a comprehensive high school in the south end of the Salt Lake Valley — blends naval science coursework with engaging after-school activities. Cadets train in both armed and unarmed drill, compete on a Color Guard team, and test their navigation skills through orienteering competitions against teams statewide.

Last year, Jordan’s all-girls orienteering team placed third at state, said Jonathan Ward, senior naval science instructor. “This program has really taken root and is growing by the year.”

Ward is also expanding opportunities for cadets through an academic competition team and efforts to launch a competitive air rifle team.

But the benefits go far beyond trophies.

“Whether or not you’re interested in military service, this is a great resume builder and a way to build confidence, discipline, and the capacity for hard work,” said Principal Kelcey Kemp. “These are character traits in high demand by colleges and employers.”

Students who complete three years may enlist in the armed forces at an advanced starting rank. High-performing cadets may also be nominated to compete for appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Whether students aspire to military service, engineering, public safety, or simply want to strengthen their leadership profile, the Naval Cadet Corps offers a structured environment focused on growth, service, and achievement.

Applications are open now. Families can find more information about the program online.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
