Check Your Student’s Bus Eligibility, Routes as Part of Back-to-School Preparations

Hey, parents! Don’t forget to add this to-do item on your back-to-school preparation list:  Check your child’s eligibility for transportation services and whether routes have changed from previous years.

Click here to access the updated general-education routes for the 2025-2025 school year, which starts Monday, Aug. 18.

Transportation services are provided to qualifying students. Per Utah law, which was changed during the legislative session, CSD receives funding for busing provided to general-education students in kindergarten through fifth grade who live at least 1 ½ miles from school and students in grades six through 12 who live at least 2 miles from school.

This is a change from previous years, when the law stated that sixth-grade students qualified for busing if they lived more than 1 ½ miles from their boundary school. Also, the location of bus stops and pick-up and drop-off times may have changed now that previously qualifying sixth graders are not included in the bus-route planning.

However, to help families whose students don’t qualify for busing, Canyons will continue its popular space-available bus permit program for the coming year.

If a student does not qualify for transportation services, but lives within walking distance of a bus stop, parents can request space on the bus. If space is available, then permits for those available spaces are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Canyons will begin taking space-available bus permit applications at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4—the same day that Back-to-School Online Registration starts for the coming school year. The permit applications are submitted via the Canyons District website.

Click here to access the space-available bus permit applications.

Paper forms will not be accepted. Families without computer or Internet access at home may use the computers in lobbies of schools for Back-to-School Online Registration.

Please note: Students who already qualify for transportation do not need to apply for space-available bus permits. In addition, students who attend a school other than the one assigned to them by geographic boundary do not qualify for the bus permits. Exceptions are SALTA routes.

During the first few weeks of the school year, transportation services will not be provided to non-qualifying students, even if they have submitted a space-available permit request. This time is needed to verify the number of students who, according to state law, are guaranteed a spot on the bus.

Families will be notified about whether they have received a space-available bus permit by Friday, Sept. 5. Questions?  Please send an email to communications@canyonsdistrict.org.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
