Getting Involved

Career Exploration, Post-High School Planning Expo for Students Receiving 504, Special Education Services

Helping students successfully transition from high school to adulthood takes planning, partnership, and access to the right resources.

To support that goal for Canyons District students who are receiving 504 accommodations or special education services, families are invited to attend the “Step Into the Future: Student Futures Expo” on Wednesday, March 25, 4-7 p.m. at the Canyons District offices, 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy.

Aging out of school is a pivotal milestone, which can feel overwhelming for students and families alike. Questions abound on any number of topics, from employment and post-secondary education to job training programs and independent living supports.

The Student Futures Expo is designed to bring answers to those questions together in one place. During the event, students and families will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet local employers and learn about job opportunities
  • Explore post-high school programs and training pathways
  • Connect with community agencies that provide adult services and supports

A highlight of the evening will be the opportunity for students to participate in optional mock job interviews. Because space is limited, advance registration is required for the mock interviews using this link. Students who wish to participate should plan to dress professionally and bring copies of their resume.

Families are encouraged to attend the expo together and take advantage of this opportunity to explore options and ask questions. The goal is not just to provide information, but to help students envision what is possible.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
