Make Your Mark Art Contest: Students Invited to Leave a Lasting Impression on New Canyons Innovation Center

The new Canyons Innovation Center is being built to inspire the next generation of makers and doers. Now, Canyons District students have an opportunity to help shape the building itself — and leave their mark for generations to come.

The District has launched “Make Your Mark,” a student art contest inviting students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, to create original artwork for the halls and walls of the new facility, scheduled to open in August 2027. Entries are due Dec. 15, 2026.

Twelve large wall panels throughout the Innovation Center have been reserved for student-designed artwork. The winning designs will be reproduced at full size and permanently installed in the building’s Engineering, Health Sciences, and Computer Programming hallways.

“This building is all about giving students opportunities to discover their talents and explore career interests by working on real-world projects commissioned by local businesses,” Canyons Innovation Center Director Reid Newey. “What better way to bring that vision to life than by inviting students to help create the space where that learning will happen?”

Students are encouraged to create designs that reflect the CIC’s engineering, health sciences, and computer programming pathways. Picture a robotic hand, an engineering tool, a medical instrument, or a computer component — an image brought to life with mathematical equations, scientific diagrams, or computer code woven into the background.

Each wall panel has its own dimensions, shape, and background color requirements. Students can view photographs of the actual spaces and examples of the desired artistic style on the contest website.

The contest is open to all Canyons District students, regardless of artistic experience. Students can submit designs individually or collaborate in teams. Participants may enter designs for more than one wall space.

Traditional or digitally-created drawings, paintings, and images can be submitted electronically using a clear photograph or scan. Originality is an important part of the judging process and no ai-generated images are accepted.

A review panel will evaluate entries based on four equally weighted criteria: how well the design reflects its chosen career pathway and artistic style, originality, print readiness, and completeness of the submission. Students whose designs are selected will receive a cash prize and certificate and be credited alongside their permanently installed artwork.

Students and families can explore the 12 available wall spaces, review design specifications, and find submission instructions at https://cic.canyonsdistrict.org/innovation-art/.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
