Canyons to Host Internet Safety Nights for Parents

From artificial intelligence to social media, the digital world is changing fast. Canyons School District is helping parents keep pace — and keep their children safe.

Canyons is partnering with the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) to host three Parent Internet Safety Nights, offering families practical advice for navigating the opportunities and risks of an increasingly connected world.

The free, two-hour events will feature Michelle Busch-Upwall of Utah ICAC, who will share insights into online safety, emerging digital threats and steps parents can take to protect their children. The sessions will cover everything from managing screen time and establishing age-appropriate technology rules to understanding artificial intelligence and identifying apps parents should know about.

Due to the sensitive nature of the some of the topics discussed, the events are for adults only. Students younger than 17 will not be admitted.

Each evening will begin with an hourlong presentation by Busch-Upwall, followed by two breakout sessions covering separate topics.

Families can choose from three dates and locations. All events run from 6–8 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2026: Mount Jordan Middle School, 9351 Mountaineer Lane, Sandy

Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2027: Corner Canyon High School, 12943 S. 700 East, Draper

Tuesday, April 20, 2027: Hillcrest High School, 7350 S. 900 East, Midvale. This session will be offered in English and Spanish.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
