Canyons Board of Education Appoints Dr. McKay Robinson as Superintendent

The Canyons Board of Education has appointed a proven, student-centered leader with deep roots in the District to serve as the fifth Superintendent of Canyons School District.

Following a comprehensive review process, the Board appointed Dr. Robinson, a 25-year educator and current Assistant Superintendent, citing his demonstrated performance and steady leadership during pivotal moments for the District.

“After careful consideration, the Board determined that the strongest candidate to lead Canyons forward is already here — someone with a proven track record who occupies a special place of trust with our schools,” said Canyons Board of Education President Amber Shill. “At a time when we are advancing major initiatives, from the opening of the Canyons Innovation Center to addressing enrollment challenges impacting schools across Utah, continuity in leadership is critical.”

Robinson will succeed Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins who will remain with the District for period of time to ensure a smooth leadership handoff.

As Superintendent, he will serve as the chief executive of CSD’s 47 schools and programs and steer the continued implementation of the District’s Strategic Plan.

“Dr. Robinson has the vision, relationships and community trust we need to build on our success,” Shill said. “He’s prepared to lead on day one and keep our District moving forward.”

A career educator who got his start as a teacher at Sprucewood Elementary, Dr. Robinson has served as a principal, School Performance Director, and Assistant Superintendent. He has been with Canyons since the District’s earliest days.

His path to education began with a teacher who changed his life. As a third-grade student navigating a difficult time, he found support in Mr. Miner, and vowed to the one day be “that person” for others.

Known for his frequent presence in schools and giving voice to what’s best for students, Dr. Robinson’s approachable leadership style was a valuable asset during the COVID-19 health crisis as the District navigated new territory to create safety protocols. For his contributions, he was named the District’s 2022 Apex Award winner for Administrator of the Year.

He was instrumental in the development of Canyons’ Strategic Plan, and collaborated with parents, teachers, and administrators to build protocols and guidelines to help students use technology responsibly and acquire good digital habits.

“I am truly honored by the trust the Board has placed in me and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the students, families, and employees of Canyons School District,” Robinson said. “This is a District filled with extraordinary people doing incredible work. I can’t think of a more meaningful opportunity than continuing to support our students and the people who serve them every day.”

Dr. Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in Korean from Utah State University, a master’s degree in teaching and master’s in educational leadership from Brigham Young University, and a doctorate in K-12 leadership and policy from the University of Utah.

While serving as Principal at Lone Peak Elementary, he earned the 2012 Utah Association of Elementary School Principals Award and was named the Utah PTA’s 2013 Outstanding Administrator of the Year. In 2017, while at the helm at Sandy Elementary, his peers in the Canyons Association of Elementary School Principals honored him as Innovator of the Year.

Dr. Robinson is an avid Yankees fan and cyclist who has raced in the LOTOJA eight times, a more than 200-mile road race from Logan to Jackson, Wyo., with 9,800 feet of climbing. When he’s not at work, on the sidelines at a sporting event or watching a school musical, he enjoys traveling with his wife of nearly 26 years, Dixie.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
