‘Ideas Worth Spreading’: TEDxCSDTeachers

TED Talks have featured “ideas worth spreading” from the world’s most notable innovators and speakers on technology, entertainment and design. Now, Canyons School District is hosting Utah’s first TEDx event for teachers.

TEDxCSDTeachers is part of the TEDx program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience, which includes live speakers and recorded TED Talks. The TEDxCSDTeachers event is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Butler Middle School. Space is limited to 100 attendees, based on an application process. Priority will be given to Canyons teachers, for whom substitutes will be provided.

Canyons is accepting presenter proposals now through Tuesday, Sept. 24. Topics must promote college- and career-readiness, best practices, and high-quality educators. The following are some dates to remember:

– Sept. 24 – Call for presenters closes
– Oct. 21 — Deadline for attendee applications.
– Nov. 8 – TEDxCSDTeachers event, 8 a.m. — 3:30 p.m., Butler Middle School

TEDx aims to give communities the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level, according to its Web site. TEDx events are independently planned and coordinated.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
