CSD Establishes Athletic Eligibility Rules for Corner Canyon

  • Post category:General News
  • Post last modified:September 28, 2012

The Canyons Board of Education has established rules that will govern athletic eligibility for students who live in the Corner Canyon High School boundaries or wish to attend Corner Canyon High in fall 2013. They are as follows:

  • Sophomores and juniors enrolled for the 2012-2013 school year at Alta, Brighton, Jordan or Hillcrest high schools and who live in the Corner Canyon High boundary at the time of the school’s opening are automatically enrolled at Corner Canyon. Their athletic eligibility transfers with them. While we encourage student athletes to declare their athletic-participation intentions for planning purposes – and to help them mentally prepare for the coming year at a new school – these students are not required to submit a CSD Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent Form.
  • Students who live in the Corner Canyon boundaries yet want to continue attending and playing athletics at their current school must submit both the Standard Open Enrollment Application and a Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent Form by Nov. 1, 2012.  The open-enrollment application goes to the school where the student wishes to attend. The athletic-declaration form is submitted to the CSD Office of School Accountability and Performance.
  • Current ninth-grade students who attend any Canyons District middle school during the 2012-2013 school year but live outside Corner Canyon High boundaries will be allowed to declare their intent to attend Corner Canyon by submitting the Standard Open Enrollment Application and the Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Form prior to Nov. 1, 2012.
  • Incoming freshman in 2013-2014 will be establishing athletic eligibility for the first time. Therefore, they will be subject to standard UHSAA rules.
  • Any Canyons District high school student living in the Corner Canyon boundaries who does not submit a Standard Open Enrollment Application and declare athletic eligibility at his or her current school by Nov. 1, 2012 will be eligible for athletics at Corner Canyon High School only.

Individual Declarations of Athletic Eligibility Intent Forms need not be disclosed to the school attended but must be registered through my office by Nov. 1, 2012.

If the forms are given to the school, they will be forwarded to the Office of the Assistant Superintendent for School Accountability and Performance. However, please be aware that registration for the 2013-2014 school year will begin in November of this year and students will be registering with the school they intend to attend.

Questions? Please call the Office of School Accountability and Performance at 801-826-5140.

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY EXAMPLES

Scenario No. 1: Student A does not live in the Corner Canyon High boundary.  She attends ninth grade at a middle school in Canyons School District during the 2012-2013 school year and plays on one or more high school athletic teams.  She wants to attend Corner Canyon High when it opens in 2013.  She must apply to attend the school during Open Enrollment and fill out the Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent Form and submit it to Dr. Kathryn McCarrie by Nov. 1, 2012.  Her athletic eligibility will transfer with her to Corner Canyon, if her open-enrollment permit application is accepted. (This applies to ninth-grade students only.)

Scenario No. 2: Student B lives in the Corner Canyon High boundary.  He attends Alta High during the 2012-2013 school year and plays on one or more high school athletic teams.  He wants to continue at Alta High in the 2013-2014 school year.  He must fill out the Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent Form and submit it to Dr. Kathryn McCarrie by Nov. 1, 2012. He also must submit a Standard Open Enrollment Application to remain at Alta High.

Scenario No. 3: Student C lives in the Corner Canyon High boundary. She attends ninth-grade at a private or charter high school (schools that go beyond the ninth-grade) during the 2012-2013 school year.  She has thus established eligibility at the private or charter school. If she transfers to Corner Canyon High for the 2013-2014 school year, she is subject to UHSAA transfer requirements.

Scenario No. 4:  Student D lives in the Corner Canyon High boundary and attends Alta High School during the 2012-2013 school year and plays on one or more athletic teams.  He plans on attending Corner Canyon High School in the fall of 2013.  In the spring, he changes his mind and prefers to continue at Alta High School.  Since he failed to declare his intent to continue at Alta by Nov. 1, 2012, his athletic eligibility is now at his boundary school, Corner Canyon High.  Since he missed the District deadline, he will not be eligible to play at Alta High.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: My student attends a charter high school or academy (a school that goes beyond the ninth grade), but lives in the Corner Canyon High boundary. Can he attend and participate in athletics at Corner Canyon High?
A: He can attend Corner Canyon High. However, because he had attended another school, his athletic eligibility will not automatically transfer. He needs to follow UHSAA transfer rules.

Q: We live in the Corner Canyon High boundary, and my child attends another Canyons District high school.  She is active in athletics and wants to stay at her current high school when Corner Canyon High opens. What do we need to do?
A: You will need to fill out and submit the Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent form by Nov. 1, 2012, indicating your student’s intent to stay at her current high school.  You will also need to request a permit to attend that school through the open enrollment process.

Q: We live in the District but not in the Corner Canyon High School boundaries, and my student is a junior at a Canyons School District high school. He wants to attend Corner Canyon High when it opens in 2013.  What do we need to do?
A: You will need to request an open-enrollment permit from Corner Canyon High.  Please be aware your student’s athletic eligibility will not transfer with him. The UHSAA transfer rules would apply.

Q: My student lives in the Corner Canyon High boundary but has been attending another Canyons District high school. She wants to go to Corner Canyon High when it opens.  She is not involved in athletics. What does she need to do?
A: Nothing! It doesn’t matter if the student is involved in athletics. All Corner Canyon High boundary students are automatically accepted at Corner Canyon High.

Q: We do not live in the Corner Canyon High boundary. My student is a ninth-grader at a middle school in Canyons District and plays on a Canyons School District high school football team. What do we need to do to get him enrolled at Corner Canyon High?
A: Fill out and submit the Declaration of Athletic Eligibility Intent Form and the Standard Open Enrollment Application by Nov. 1, 2012.  Your student’s athletic eligibility will transfer if accepted at CCHS.
