Quail Hollow Named 2012 National Blue Ribbon School

Quail Hollow Elementary has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in recognition of its high achievement. The Sandy school is among three Utah schools, and 269 nationwide, to receive the honor, announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012.

“Our nation has no greater responsibility than helping all children realize their full potential,” Duncan said in a press release. “Schools honored with the National Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and that education is the surest pathway to a strong, secure future.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students’ levels of achievement. A recognition ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 12-13, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
