Innovation Center Update

The Board of Education reviewed proposed blueprints for the Innovation Center, which will replace the Canyons Technical Education Center as CSD’s technical-training center.  MHTN architects displayed drafts of retrofit designs for the 215,000-square-foot building, the former regional headquarters of the Draper-based eBay. The plans chalk out the proposed space allocations to such programs as broadcast and digital media, information technology, business and industry, medical and health sciences, hands-on trades, engineering and technology, and hospitality. Color schemes and interior design concepts for entryways, collaboration spaces, classrooms, hallways, and the planned meeting rooms for partnerships with business and higher-education partners were included as part of a Study Session roundtable discussion. Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins also asked the Board for guidance on a philosophy for sponsorships, partnerships, and donations to the center, including the naming rights for wings, buildings, rooms, and programs. The Board asked the Administration to develop a possible framework for in-kind and monetary contributions to the center. In addition, two lists of possible names for the future facility were presented to members of the Board during both the Study Session and Business Meeting. The first list was developed through an internal naming- and branding-development process, which included gathering input from current Canyons Technical Education Center students, listening to industry-partner focus group feedback, and brainstorming with CSD personnel and the Canyons task force helping to guide the launch of the new center. The five proposed names from the internal process included Synergy, InSight, Nexus, the Peaks, and the Forge. The Board also considered names proposed by a national branding company that works with MHTN. Gardner Design’s suggested names included Amplus, Invisia, Radian, Spectra, Prisma, LumiNex, Lumus, and Synergix. Board members recommended additional potential names. They also conducted an informal straw poll of the names now being considered and asked the Administration to give input. Nexus and Synergy, as well as a newly proposed Confluence and the Wave, were among those that were advanced for further consideration.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
