Board Announces Dr. James Briscoe as Canyons Superintendent

The Canyons Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint as Superintendent Dr. James Briscoe, who has 12 years of experience as a superintendent of schools, most recently in DeKalb, Ill. The appointment, effective July 1, 2014, follows an exhaustive national superintendent search, which began last fall and included three months of community input meetings, an extensive application and interview process, and workplace site visits.

“Tonight, we’re ready to appoint a superintendent who will lead our District into a bright future. We are dedicated to maintaining the current vision and mission of our District, and we’re confident that together, along with our new superintendent, we can ensure that our children will leave our schools ready for college and careers,” Board President Sherril Taylor said. “Dr. Briscoe, we are all unitedly behind you, and we welcome you.”

Board members said Briscoe will continue to forward Canyons’ college- and career-ready academic plan. They noted Dr. Briscoe, while in DeKalb, has been putting into place many of the same academic frameworks as Canyons.

“I’m ready to take the next step as we continue to celebrate all that has been accomplished and all the strides that have been made, as well as all those we will make together well into the future,” Board Member Kim Horiuchi said. “I am confident in Dr. Briscoe’s ability to lead the way.”

Dr. Briscoe thanked the Board for the opportunity to serve the people of Canyons.

“The programs that were implemented over the last four years — the work that must have gone into this, the rigors that must have gone into this — the administration and staff have to be completely commended for what they’ve done. I’m excited about it so I can become part of it and work with the staff and administration to continue the great things that they’re doing,” Dr. Briscoe said.

“It’s such a joy in my life to watch kids grow up and develop, become part of the community, give back to the community, and want to be part of the community. That’s what I feel in Canyons School District,” he said. “I just can’t wait to meet all of you and get to know you … and start to work alongside all of you.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
