Yearlong Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary
On July 4, 2026 America will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Canyons School District is proud to join our state and nation in commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, we will celebrate this historic milestone by engaging our students and community in meaningful, patriotic, and educational experiences.

Below are some proactive suggestions that your schools and families can participate in during this school year:

  • Commemorating our nation’s founding through Constitution Day on September 17, 2025, and Founder’s Month during September.
  • Providing every 5th and 8th grade student with a personal copy of the U.S. Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, supporting civic knowledge and engagement.
  • Participating in the state’s Constitution Fitness program, reinforcing understanding of our democratic principles.
  • Supporting the “High Cost of Freedom” Essay Contest, in partnership with Sandy City and in conjunction with Veterans Day, to honor those who have served our country.
  • Engaging in service across our schools and community as part of America250: America Gives, fostering a year-round culture of service that extends beyond 2026.
    • Encourage your PTA, PTSA Student Clubs, National Honor Society, and all student clubs to participate in this service opportunity. You may submit hours for volunteers who serve at least 5 hours.
  • Highlighting the importance of the U.S. flag through America250: America Waves, a nationwide campaign paying tribute to this enduring symbol of our nation.
    • To achieve this is Canyons we just want you to highlight what you are already doing! At football games, Veteran’s Day celebrations, when one of your student groups presents the colors at an event and everyday as you say the Pledge of Allegiance, add on a special line about  America’s 250th – the Anniversary of the Signing the Declaration of Independence July 4, 2026. Take pictures of your students/classes/clubs in events with the American flag and submit them to communications@canyonsdistrict.org
  • “The Pen is Mightier: Writing a Revolution” sponsored by the Larry and Gail Miller Foundation will be on display at the 4th floor of the Utah State Capitol starting in January. We encourage any of your grades who visit the Capitol to spend an extra few minutes seeing this display. External Relations will work it in to any tours and field trips that we help host.
  • Teaching historical thinking skills through oral histories as part of America250: Our American Story, contributing to the largest collection of firsthand accounts gathered in preparation for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
  • Walk 250 encourages citizens and families to walk 250 miles between July 2025 and July 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary. Keep track of your steps and miles to participate in this. We will let our families know that this is a program. But schools, teams (especially those track and cross country programs) can easily let us know when their students have completed 250 miles. You can track it here.

Together, these efforts will not only honor our nation’s past but also inspire our students to be informed, engaged, and service-minded citizens for the future.

We encourage you to learn more about Utah’s America250. You can find more information at

In addition to these items, Canyons will be celebrating with our Founders Month/Constitution Day celebrations (September), Veterans Day celebrations (November), and our annual “The High Cost of Freedom” Essay contest recognized by Superintendent Robins and selected essays engraved on a monument at Sandy City Hall (November).

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
