It’s time for the Canyons District Insurance Department’s Winter Lifestyles Challenge.  A sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest obstacles to healthy living. Getting out and moving can be daunting when the weather turns cold.  Over the next 10 weeks, from Monday, Nov. 25, 2020 to Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021 we would like to encourage everyone to spend at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week, doing something active. There is no weigh-in or sign up to participate. Starting Nov. 25, simply track your activities, using the log on the entry form, and return the log to the Insurance Department by Friday, Feb. 12, 2021.  The log sheet must be completed in full with one line per day to be eligible for the drawing. Only one entry per person will be accepted.   This year’s prizes include a GoPro, TV, wireless speakers and many other great items.

Benefits of an Active Lifestyle

Active lifestyles have proven to have a positive impact on a person’s sense of well-being.  Striving to live a healthy lifestyle is one of the best things that you can do for yourself and your family. Active people tend to have healthier bodyweights, lower blood pressure, healthier blood sugar levels, and a more positive mental outlook.  Active individuals also tend to need substantially less medical care, which can save you money.  

What Kinds of Activities Count?

Almost any activity that gets you moving counts — as long as it increases your heart rate and is done for at least 30 minutes, three days a week. No cheating! You cannot be super active one week and count it for the entire winter. So, bundle up and take your dog for a walk, shovel the neighbor’s driveway, or hit the slopes. Here are a few examples of activities that will qualify:

  • Skiing
  • Snow shoeing
  • Hiking
  • Aerobics
  • Weight lifting
  • Walking briskly
  • Shoveling snow
  • Zumba
  • Swimming
  • Yoga
  • Jumping rope
  • Building a snowman
