Corner Canyon High School Returns to Virtual Learning Schedule for All Students

All Corner Canyon High students will engage in virtual learning for the next two school weeks.

The decision to temporarily change the school’s schedule is in response to the rise in numbers of COVID-19 cases associated with CCHS in addition to the positive rates in the community surrounding the Draper campus.

The action was taken Friday, Nov. 13 after consulting with the Salt Lake County Health Department.

Virtual classes for all Chargers will begin Monday, Nov. 16. On-campus classes are expected to resume on Monday, Nov. 30 — the same day that Alta and Jordan high schools and Indian Hills Middle return to in-person learning.  Alta, Jordan and Indian Hills pivoted to online earlier this week after experiencing increases in novel coronavirus cases associated with the schools.

On Friday, Nov. 13, when students were engaged in independent learning as part of CSD’s usual schedule that provides Fridays for teachers to plan, collaborate and prepare for the coming week, Corner Canyon faculty and staff prepared to begin teaching virtual classes.

More information about online learning expectations via Canvas will be forthcoming from the school and individual teachers.

What about the Corner Canyon students who also are taking classes at the Canyons Technical Education Center?  They can keep going to those classes in person — but only if they are not currently in quarantine or isolation. Buses will not run from homes to Corner Canyon during the online-learning period, but a bus will run on its regular schedule from CCHS to CTEC. CTEC students also may ride the bus back to Corner Canyon High.

With the action, CSD is following the guidelines put into place by the Canyons Board of Education for when a school reaches a certain threshold of positive COVID-19 cases within a two-week period.

Under the guidelines, if CSD traditional high school reaches a 1 percent COVID-19 rate among students and employees within a 14-day window, it will spark a discussion about possible mitigation efforts, including a temporary schedule change. Corner Canyon High, according to the most recent data from health authorities, has reached that threshold.

Information about the number of COVID-19 cases associated with each school, as well as the number of students and teachers on quarantine, can be found on the District’s data dashboard.

While the students are engaged in online learning away from campus, Corner Canyon High will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Throughout the online-learning period, Corner Canyon High students can get meals at one of the “open lunch” sites operated by CSD Nutrition Services. These are locations where any child, 18 years of age or under can pick up a free sack lunch and cold breakfast to enjoy the following day. Parents can pick up sack meals at any of the following curbside locations without having their children present. Pick-up times vary and are determined by each school.

  • Butler Middle,  7530 S. 2700 East, Cottonwood Heights
  • Midvale Middle, 7852 Pioneer Rd., Midvale
  • Draper Park Middle, 13133 S. 1300 East

Corner Canyon High students may also receive a meal from any Canyons District school in which a sibling is enrolled. Schools ask, however, that meals are preordered so that the kitchens know how much food to prepare. Emails requesting the meals can be sent to the school’s cafeteria manager.  Contact information for the cafeteria manager can be found on the website of the school where the meal would be provided.

Following an executive order by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and a concurrent health order by the Utah Department of Health, Utah students will not be participating in extracurriculars until at least Nov. 23. The exceptions are the football teams in the midst of Utah High School Activities Association-sponsored championship playoffs.  Corner Canyon High will compete in the Nov. 20 championship game – but any players who participate in the game must test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of the game.

Canyons District continues to ask the community to follow safety precautions while at and away from school. Please wear face coverings, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and observe physical distancing guidelines in public.

Questions? Please direct questions by email to communications@canyonsdistrict.org. Parents also can call the school or the District Office at 801-826-5000 during work hours.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
