CCHS Senior Receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

Claudia Gonzalez, a senior at Corner Canyon High School has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award .

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. The Corner Canyon administration nominated Claudia for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

Claudia has been very active in Latinos in Action, a community-based organization working to create access for Latino students.  The Corner Canyon chapter of Latinos in Action is active and performs hundreds of hours of community service including tutoring young children whose first language is not English.

“We are very proud of Claudia for demonstrating civic responsibility through volunteering her time, talent, and energy,” said Principal Mary Bailey. “Claudia is also one of our Sterling Scholars and just successfully completed her interview in the final round of competition.  She’s an all-around student, and excels in whatever she undertakes.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
