Join CSD In A Yuletide Donation Drive For Homeless Shelter

‘Tis the season of giving and goodwill.

The Canyons Board of Education and Administration invite families and businesses in the community to join the District in a holiday donation drive for the Midvale overflow shelter of The Road Home.

Following a yuletide tradition established in the first year of the District’s operations, Canyons District Office employees are raising money and collecting goods for the shelter, which houses dozens of CSD students and their families. A handful of schools also are conducting drives to benefit the local shelter.

While new and gently used goods of all kinds are gladly accepted, this year the shelter especially needs socks, underwear and laundry detergent. Donations will be collected at the Canyons Administration Building, 9150 S. 500 West, and Canyons Support Services Center, 9361 S. 300 East, until Friday, Dec. 20.

Cash, check and gift-card donations can be directed to Scott Harper, 801-826-5171, in the Canyons Education Foundation. Please make checks to Canyons School District. The Foundation can also facilitate donations made with debit or credit cards.

“This will be the fifth year CSD employees have conducted a yuletide drive for the shelter, and I have been pleased with all that we have been able to accomplish for families who need a little extra help,” said Canyons Interim Superintendent Ginger Rhode. “Throughout the years, we’ve been able to provide clothing, food, toiletries, school supplies and winter holiday gifts to the students who are living, no matter how temporarily, at the shelter. Please consider yourself invited to participate in this worthy cause.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
