Jordan Student Makes Her ‘Mark’

Jordan High School junior Olivia Braiker has made her mark in the Utah Educational Savings Plan bookmark contest — and earned a $1,000 UESP college savings account scholarship for her winning bookmark design. For her artistry, Olivia was honored by Gov. Gary Herbert at a luncheon and awards ceremony Nov. 15, 2013 at Zions Bank headquarters in Salt Lake City. She also was recognized by the Canyons Board of Education on Nov. 19, 2013 for her achievements.

“College is very important because it provides the opportunity for someone to attain a better quality of life than they would have if they’d only graduated high school,” says Olivia, who plans to study biology at the University of Utah. “My parents have had a savings plan for me since I was born. We talk about what I can do to save money for college, like putting away money from my paychecks and applying for scholarships.”

Each year, Utah students are invited to design a bookmark to be submitted to the UESP “Make Your Mark” Bookmark Contest. UESP and Zions Bank award a total of eight $1,000 UESP college savings scholarship accounts, or two each for the following grade-level categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12. The bookmark will be printed by Zions Bank and UESP.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
