Veterans Day: CSD Schools Salute the U.S. Armed Forces

Canyons District pauses today to pay tribune to America’s veterans – the men and women who have given so much of themselves to protect America’s many freedoms, including the right of all children to be granted access to a free, appropriate public education.

Today, standing against silver slivers of falling snow, American flags are on display at our campuses, with the red, white and blue of Old Glory rippling like so many ribbons in the wind. Veterans have been invited to receptions, meals and assemblies, such as Alta High’s annual salute to past and current American soldiers.

Schools are honoring the community’s veterans in many ways. Last Friday, Draper Park Middle hosted a breakfast for all active or veteran members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Ridgecrest Elementary also held an event during which students performed patriotic songs, the JROTC presented the flag, and a veteran spoke to students.  Sunrise Elementary also had a celebration-of-veterans assembly for the school that was then performed again for parents and guardians.

As is tradition in Canyons District, employees who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces received a letter of appreciation from the Board of Education and Administration.

“Today, as the United States collectively salutes the current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, we’d like to personal express our appreciation for your service to the United States of America,” reads the letter from Board of Education President Sherill H. Taylor and Superintendent Jim Briscoe.

“Educating our community’s children is a noble endeavor, and we’re proud to be working with you in a celebration of the highest standards of educational excellence.  This Veterans Day, we make you this promise: American soldiers, and their strength and valor, will always be honored in Canyons District schools. Again, many thanks for your service.  We salute you.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
