Add ‘Sterling Scholar’ To Resumes of Hillcrest, Jordan Students

Two Canyons District students were golden in their efforts to become Sterling Scholars, an annual competition of academic achievement sponsored by the Deseret News and KSL-TV Channel 5.
 
Hillcrest High’s David Sagae was announced as the overall winner in Business and Marketing, and Jordan High’s Tanner Nelson topped the competition in World Languages.
 
Sagae, son of Joaquim and Caroline Sagae, is ranked No. 22 in a graduating class of 483 students. His overall GPA is 3.997, and he earned a 32 composite score on the ACT. Sagae’s awards and accomplishments include first place in FBLA Business Communication in the Metro Region; first place in FBLA Global Business; first place Future Business Leader; and founder of trialsizedonations.org, a Web site dedicated to collecting travel-size toiletries for organizations that help low-income families.   
 
Nelson, son of Karl and Amy Nelson, is ranked No. 1 out of a 485-student graduating class.  His GPA is a 4.0, and he earned a 28 composite score on the ACT.  He received an academic letter in foreign language, is the Spanish Club President, served as the team captain for the sophomore football team, and participated in Brigham Young University’s Language Bowl.
 
The winners were announced Wednesday, March 12, 2014. Some 1,000 students across the state vied for the prestigious awards.
 
Sterling Scholars were named in 14 categories: Business and Marketing, Computer Technology, Dance, English, Family and Consumer Science, Instrumental Music, Mathematics, Science, Skilled and Technical Sciences, Social Science, Speech/Theater Arts/Forensics, Visual Arts, Vocal Performance and World Languages.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
