Check Mate! Middle School Students Prep for Chess Tourney

Canyons District sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders are preparing to square off at the CSD Middle School Chess Tournament Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014. The fourth-annual tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. at Mount Jordan Middle School, 11150 S. 300 East in Sandy, and includes the top six competitors from each of Canyons’ eight middle schools. Sixth-graders are included in the tournament for the first time this year due to Canyons District grade reconfiguration, designed to better prepare students for college and careers.

The tournament is part of the Canyons Middle School Intramurals Program, created in 2009 to offer young teens competitive athletic and academic events in which everyone is welcome to participate. Other tournaments include cross country, which was held in October, 2013; 3-on-3 basketball and soccer, which are scheduled for spring 2014.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
