Middle School Dual Immersion Programs Topic of Meeting

Parents of fifth-graders enrolled in Canyons District Dual Immersion Language Programs have been invited to a meeting Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 to learn about the District’s plans to transition students from elementary school to middle school.

At the 6 p.m. event at the Canyons Support Services Center, 9361 S. 300 East, parents will view sixth-grade dual-immersion course offerings, be presented with an overview of courses from sixth to 12th grades, and see a sample middle school schedule.

Principals from Mount JordanIndian Hills and Draper Park middle schools, which will host programs next fall, will be on hand to meet the parents and answer any questions. Parents also will be provided guidance on program enrollment.

Currently, Alta View, which hosts a Spanish-English program; Oak Hollow, home to a French-English program; and Draper and Lone Peak elementary schools, which both have Mandarin Chinese-English programs, have fifth-graders in the program. Spanish-English will be hosted at Mount Jordan, and French-English will be offered at Draper Park Middle School in the 2014-2015 school year.  Draper Park and Indian Hills will have Mandarin Chinese-English programs.

Families received in December a postcard invitation to the meeting.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
