Board Empanels CSD’s First-Ever Student Advisory Council

Students: The Canyons Board of Education wants to hear from you!

The Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 introduced its newly empaneled, 10-member Student Advisory Council. The council is made up of two students from each high school – one student body officer and one student (a junior or senior) – selected as part of an application process. Council representatives will attend the Board’s semi-monthly meetings, discuss issues facing the Board, and provide input to the Board from a student’s perspective.

“You will make a difference,” Board President Sherril Taylor said in thanking the students for taking part in the inaugural panel. “You are leading out on something new. It’s very important what you’re doing, and we the Board are looking forward to your input and we will take it seriously when you give it to us.”

Members of CSD’s first Student Advisory Council, chaired by founder and Alta student Katrina Jones, are:

The council was created following a proposal from Alta student Katrina Jones, meetings of a task force, and an Aug. 20, 2013 vote by the Board. The task force included student leaders, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kathryn McCarrie, Brighton Principal Charisse Hilton and Hillcrest Principal Sue Malone.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
