CSD Announces Dates, Times of SALTA Testing

Canyons District will begin accepting applications from students wanting to take the test to participate in the SALTA magnet program for the 2014-2015 school year on Sept. 23, 2013.

Parents with students in kindergarten through fourth grade may apply to participate in the program, as well as third-grade students who are currently in the program. Kindergarten students must meet the state standard for kindergarten age to be eligible to take the test to participate in SALTA, which stands for Supporting Advanced Learners Toward Achievement.

The District will accept applications beginning Sept. 23, 2013, until midnight Oct. 25, 2013. Applications must be filed online.

No late applications will be accepted.

Third-grade students who are currently enrolled in the program must be tested for continued eligibility for the program. Testing for all students applying to participate in SALTA will take place over a two-day block and will be about two hours on day one, and three hours on day two.

The testing dates are:

  • Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, and Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013
  • Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, and Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013

Parents may want to consider testing their child for entry into SALTA if their child has an advanced vocabulary, asks many questions, has lots of ideas and is imaginative, or is a strong reader, among other things.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
