11th Annual Retirees Banquet – Celebrating the Art of Adventure

Ready for takeoff? With a pandemic, earthquakes, and school closures, the past few months have been about as adventure-filled as it gets.

But to work in education is to have the heart of an adventurer. After all, learning is adventure. It’s about setting off into the unknown with a question and coming back with more questions. It means embracing those moments when things don’t work out as planned to push past your comfort zone and soar to new heights.

It’s with this spirit that Canyons District’s retirees have tackled the big, important job of preparing today’s children to be tomorrow’s pilots, political leaders and Board Room presidents. We’re confident it’s also how they’ll embrace retirement.

Whether they’re withdrawing from active working life this summer to scuba dive or skydive, write a book, learn an instrument, or perform acts of service, CSD’s retirees are bound for great destinations, and deserve a proper send-off. Health guidelines bar us from hosting CSD’s traditional by-invitation-only Retirees Banquet, but schools and departments are saluting their retirees at Open House events held in line with social distancing requirements.

Below is a list of these events to bid bon voyage to the amazing teachers, administrators and Education Support Professionals who intend to make this year with CSD their last. To be added to the list below, email the name of the retiree and the date, time and place of the Open House to communications@canyonsdistrict.org

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
