Curriculum Maps & Standards

Canyons School District promotes life-long health and physical fitness for ALL students. In order to develop healthy lifestyles, students require knowledge, skills, attitudes, and positive habits that can be brought to fruition through quality curriculum, instruction, and guided practice opportunities. Health Education:Health classes guide students to be able to

  • Access valid health information and health-promoting projects and services
  • Analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and environment on health
  • Develop understanding and respect for self and others
  • Practice goal-setting, decision-making, and self-management skills to enhance health
  • Practice health-enhancing and risk-reducing behaviors
  • Use interpersonal communication skills to improve health and relationships
  • Advocate for personal, family, and community health

Physical Education:“The goal of Physical Education (PE) is to develop healthy, responsible students who have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to work together in groups, think critically, and participate in a variety of activities that lead to a lifelong healthy lifestyle (2016 Utah Health Standards).” In essence, PE develops the positive practices of physical and mental health that students learn in health class. In a quality PE class, students should be engaging in movement, exercise, playing games, and applying social skills such as following rules, navigating disputes, and encouraging others. Recommendations from physician organizations and from the Center for Disease Control suggest that students should be active for at least 60 minutes per day in order to be healthy. A large body of research indicates that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain. Building healthy habits of exercise and physical recreation yields dividends in terms of cognitive acuity, emotional regulation, social integration, as well as physical fitness.
