About Us

Canyons School District, the first new school district to be created in Utah in nearly a century, began offering educational services to the neighborhoods of Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale, Sandy and the town of Alta on July 1, 2009.

From the time of the District's founding, both the elected Board of Education and Administration have maintained a fierce dedication to building a district of national distinction. To that end, Canyons District focuses its attention on five major tenets: student achievement, innovation, community engagement, fiscal responsibility and customer service

The District, which covers roughly 192 square miles in the southeast part of the Salt Lake Valley, serves approximately 33,000 students in 29 elementary schools, eight middle schools, five high schools and four special programs.

On Nov. 6, 2007, voters in Alta, Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale, Sandy and a handful of unincorporated portions of Salt Lake County cast ballots in favor of creating a new school district from a portion of the old Jordan School District.

The new district was officially created when the Utah Lieutenant Governor's Office issued a Certificate of Entity Creation on Dec. 18, 2007. Since July 1, 2009, Canyons District has operated as a fiscally independent entity governed by an elected Board of Education. One of the Board's first major decisions was to hire Dr. David S. Doty, who at the time was serving as an Associate Commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education, as the District's first-ever Superintendent.

In the first two years of operation, Canyons, while navigating the complex logistics of launching a school district, successfully conducted a $250 million bond campaign to build and renovate schools, including a new high school in Draper, and became the first school district in Utah to begin offering differentiated diplomas to students who go above and beyond the state's requirements for high school graduation.
